China and Germany Enhance Cooperation on Biodiversity Conservation

21.05.2020

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China (MEE) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) will expand the ongoing cooperation under the Sino-German Environmental Partnership (SGEP) to further emphasise biodiversity conservation. The International Climate Initiative (IKI) funded this strategic top-up against the background of China hosting the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The newly added measures will support the dialogue between China and Germany for a more sustainable and inclusive COP as well as an ambitious post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which is to be adopted at COP 15. Sub-national pilots for ecosystem service accounting and biodiversity modelling may contribute to policy design and implementation to ultimately enhance China’s environmental governance system.

The new commission came just in time for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity. The slogan “Our solutions are in nature” emphasises hope, solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future of life in harmony with nature. The theme of the COP 15 will be: “Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth”. To build that future, we can find solutions in nature.

In this spirit, wishing everyone a happy International Day for Biological Diversity!
