Seminar on the Management of Protected Areas
The “Seminar on the Management of Protected Areas” took place on December 15th, 2020. It was co-hosted by the German Embassy in Beijing and the Sino-German Environmental Partnership Project.
The seminar was opened by Mr. Hendrik Barkeling (Head of Economic Department, Minister Counsellor, Embassy of the Federal Republic of German in Beijing). In total there were four presentations with speakers from China and Germany followed by Q&A sessions.
An overview of the protected area system in China including national parks was given by Mr. ZHANG Yunyi (Division Director of Planning and Development, Department of Protected Area Management, National Forestry and Grassland Administration, NFGA). Dr. WANG Zhi (Deputy Director of Research Center for Protected Areas, Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences, NIES), reported on the effectiveness of the protected areas system in China.
In order to present the development and the current situation in Germany, Dr. Volker Scherfose (Head of the Department of Biotope Protection and Management/ Protected Areas, Federal Agency of Nature Conservation, BfN), gave insights into Germany’s protected areas and their management. Mr. Manuel Schweiger (Head of Germany Programme, Frankfurt Zoological Society, ZGF), rounded off the seminar with his presentation on Wilderness and National Parks in Germany.
The seminar took place in the context of the preparation for the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations’ Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 15) and provided a platform for exchange and mutual topic-specific learning. It also aimed at creating momentum for an ambitious Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, which is scheduled to be adopted at CBD COP 15.
