On 23 May 2026, The First Steering Committee Meeting of the Subregional Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre for Asia and the Pacific under the Convention on Biological Diversity, and International Technical and Scientific Cooperation Workshop on Biodiversity, was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. Mr. Dong Baotong, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment of China (MEE), attended the event and delivered opening remarks, while Ms. Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, delivered a video address.

Closely aligned with the implementation needs of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), the event was held in a hybrid format, bringing together participants online and in person for in-depth discussions and exchanges on key topics including regional capacity building, implementation practices, and future cooperation.

The seminar featured four thematic sessions focusing on current priorities in global biodiversity conservation. Experts and representatives from international organizations, research institutions, governments, and civil society, including the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UNDP, GIZ, and other partner organizations—shared experiences and innovative approaches to advancing a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to biodiversity conservation.

Representatives from Cambodia, China, Pakistan, and UNDP Headquarters shared experiences in implementing National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and preparing the Seventh National Reports under the Convention on Biological Diversity, providing valuable insights for regional cooperation on biodiversity commitments. Representatives from the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and the IUCN Asia and West Asia Regional Offices discussed regional capacity-building priorities and opportunities to strengthen scientific cooperation, joint research, and resource mobilization.

The seminar also showcased successful local biodiversity conservation practices from across China, highlighting innovative approaches to biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, biodiversity financing, and public awareness.
