Meeting of the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

On 21 July, Huang Runqiu, President of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Minister of Ecology and Environment, chaired the meeting of the Bureau of the COP of the CBD. The meeting focused on the follow-up to the fourth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (hereinafter referred to as “the Framework”), the fifth meeting of WG2020 and the second phase of COP15.

The meeting was held in an online format. Elizabeth Mulema, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the United Nation Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), participated in the meeting and delivered a speech. Tara Shannon, Assistant Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada, members of the COP15 Bureau and Secretariat staff, WG2020 Co-Chairs, the Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) participated in the meeting.

Mr. Huang affirmed the work done by all parties and stressed that from now until the second phase of COP15, it is a critical period to continue consultations and promote the Framework to achieve consensus. “China will effectively play the leading and coordinating role in the Presidency, work with all parties to strengthen coordination at multiple levels and on all-round, so as to forge more consensus on the Framework and jointly promote the global biodiversity governance process.
