The nine departments National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Emergency Response, China Meteorological Administration and National Forestry and Grassland Administration issued the “Major Project Construction Plan for Ecological Protection and Restoration Support System (2021-2035)”, on December 15, 2021.

The plan calls for significant progress in scientific and technological innovation for environmental protection and restoration in key areas and regions by 2025. Basic research and technological innovation platforms for environmental protection and restoration need to be further improved, and the capacity of science and technology support services needs to be significantly increased. In addition, an integrated ecological monitoring and supervision network for “sky and land” should be established. Furthermore, the capacity for environmental monitoring of large construction projects should be significantly improved and monitoring systems for different types of ecosystems should be expanded.
