31.07.2017 – China to ban imports of waste for recycling
On July 18, China notified the World Trade Organization that it will ban the import of 24 different types of solid waste by the end of this year, as part of a campaign to tackle environmental pollu-tion. The list includes several types of scrap plastics, mixed paper, waste wool, ash, cotton and yarn. Chinese authorities cited continuous problems with polluted and hazardous wastes being mixed into the imports as reasons for the ban. This new move follows a series of recent efforts, including operation National Sword which required each and every waste container entering Chi-na to be inspected since the beginning of this year. The newest announcement to fully ban im-ports of numerous types of wasted raised concerns in many waste-exporting countries like the US about its negative effects on local recycling industries.
